Start with the result you want to see

A step counter app answers a daily question: how many steps did my phone record? A walking game offers a different experience: choose an outing and return to a sense of progress. Choose the tool for what you want to do, rather than the number of rewards on its screen.

Nicolas Alauzet, the creator of Stepwars, wrote this guide to distinguish these uses. It draws on Apple’s documentation and the game’s published guides; it is not an independent accuracy test or a ranked list of pedometers.

On iPhone, check Apple Health first

Apple explains that Health automatically counts steps and walking and running distances. Its documentation also describes how to view sources and manage information from other apps and devices. If you simply want a daily total, start with the information already on your phone.

Check the date range, source and whether several devices contribute to a total. These details help explain differences; they do not make a counter an exact record of every movement.

Four criteria for choosing a step counter

Choose a display you will actually consult. A long feature list matters less than understanding the figures, permissions and cost. A step total is an indicator; this guide sets no daily target and does not replace individual health advice.

  • Readability: can you find the day, week and data sources that interest you?
  • Permissions: understand the information the app wants to read or share.
  • Access: distinguish included features from purchases and subscriptions.
  • Everyday use: choose a simple view that fits your needs.

When a GPS walking game makes more sense

Stepwars adds a game objective to an outing: explore nearby cells, develop territory and return to a result screen. Start the outing in the iOS app. Steps accumulated throughout the day do not automatically become captures; progression depends on accepted GPS distance and game rules.

You can use a counter for the day and a game for a particular walk without expecting identical figures. Read the gamified walking guide, validation rules and walking game comparison to decide what suits you.

Check access before planning your first outing

Stepwars is intended for iPhone; Android is deferred. This guide does not announce public App Store availability. The planned subscription is €4.99/month or €39.99/year for the same features, with a three-day trial for eligible new subscribers, followed by automatic renewal unless cancelled. Purchase activation remains under verification. Check current access with the creator before preparing an outing; a web account alone does not confirm an iOS download, subscription or access.

Once you have app access, follow the first-walk guide to check location, start tracking and read the result. Review the location data policy before granting GPS permission.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need another app to count steps on iPhone?

Apple Health already records steps and walking distance automatically. Check its available data and sources before installing another app solely to see a daily step total.

Is Stepwars a pedometer?

No. Stepwars uses validated GPS movement during an outing you explicitly start. It does not replace an all-day step counter or automatically convert Apple Health steps into territory.

Why do steps and GPS results differ?

They measure different things over potentially different periods. Not carrying the phone, different data sources and rejected GPS positions can all affect the results. Neither total should be expected to equal the other.

Is Stepwars a free step counter app?

Stepwars is a walking game, not a free pedometer. Its planned paid subscription and trial are subject to eligibility and current availability; check access and purchase activation with support.
